What is ChooseCBR?

ChooseCBR is a program designed to encourage consumers to spend money at participating local businesses by offering digital discount vouchers that can be redeemed at participating businesses.

Why was ChooseCBR created?

ChooseCBR was created by the ACT Government to encourage discretionary spending in a range of sectors of the ACT economy that were particularly impacted by COVID-19.

Canberrans have been really supportive of our local businesses during COVID-19, and ChooseCBR offers another great reason to shop locally and support local jobs.

Is Choose CBR an app or a website?

Yes. Anyone over the age of 18 years old who is visiting or living in the ACT can use ChooseCBR.

How does ChooseCBR work?

Eligible local businesses can register to participate in ChooseCBR. Members of the community who are over 18 can register to receive a daily pack of discount vouchers totalling $80.

Each day registered customers can log in to access:

  • 1 x $10 ChooseCBR Discount
  • 1 x $20 ChooseCBR Discount
  • 1 x $50 ChooseCBR Discount

A minimum spend is required for each transaction. The minimum spend for the discounts are as follows:

  • To use the $10 ChooseCBR Discount the minimum spend amount is $20
  • To use the $20 ChooseCBR Discount the minimum spend amount is $40
  • To use the $50 ChooseCBR Discount the minimum spend amount is $100

You can register your business at choosecbr.act.gov.au.

To register you will need:

  • ABN
  • Proof of business address (e.g. a utility bill)
  • Bank statement as proof your business links to your nominated business account

You can also add your logo and social media handles to make your listing attractive to customers.

Once eligibility criteria is met and approved, your business will be listed in categories you nominated.

Please note it may take up to 5 working days for your application to be approved.

When will my business appear on the directory?

Your business will appear on the directory once it has been approved and you have logged in to your merchant account for the first time.

How do customers redeem their vouchers?

They use an internet enabled smart device (smartphone, tablet) or computer, simply click the discount value you would like to use and show the unique 5 digital alpha-numeric digits to the cashier at time of payment.

Customers can also present a print-out of the code or even read it out over the phone but the merchant should redeem the ChooseCBR discount prior to accepting payment to ensure validity.

Can customers redeem vouchers on alcohol, smoking or gambling products?

No, vouchers cannot be used to purchase these items.

If these items are included in the transaction, you will need to subtract their value from the total transaction value when ensuring the minimum spend requirements are met.

For example: Sam purchases a chicken schnitzel for $15 and a beer for $6. Sam cannot use their $10 voucher as the minimum spend of $20 has not been reached.

Sam purchases a $20 roast lamb and a $5 beer. Sam can redeem their $10 voucher on the transaction as it meets the minimum spend of $20.

Jamie purchases a $45 bottle of wine at a bar. Jamie cannot redeem their $20 voucher on this transaction.

Can a customer also use a gift card when redeeming a ChooseCBR voucher?

A gift card may be used in the same purchase, but is not counted when calculating the transaction minimum.
For example, if Alex wants to buy a pair of jeans worth $100 and wants to use a gift card worth $20, they could not use their $50 ChooseCBR voucher. However, they could use their $20 voucher if they wish.

How can I reconcile the vouchers?

Redeemed vouchers will appear on your dashboard.

The ACT Government will reimburse you for the value of discounts applied within 14 days of the voucher being redeemed.

What do I do if someone shows gives me the voucher code written or printed on paper?

Enter the code and transaction value as normal. If the code is accepted by the system, then honour the voucher and provide the discount to your customer. If the code is not accepted, the voucher code is either invalid or has already been redeemed. The customer will be able to access an additional voucher of that same value the day after the original voucher was redeemed. The new voucher will have a new and unique five-letter code.

How do I enter multiple vouchers for one transaction?

Customers can make a joint purchase with their vouchers (for example ‘split the bill’) as long as the eligible minimum spend is reached for each of the vouchers to be used. You will need to process a separate transaction in the ChooseCBR system for each voucher used. For example, if four people are dining together, and the total bill (excluding alcohol) is $120, then the maximum amount that can be discounted is $60. This means three customers could use their $20 vouchers. Process a $40 transaction per customer and give the customer the $20 discount.

What records do I need to keep?

You will need to keep receipts as proof of the transaction. These must show the total sale value, the value of the ChooseCBR discount applied and the date of transaction.

How long does it take for government to reimburse the vouchers?

Payment will be made to your nominated bank account within 14 days.
